The Betabox Update / February 2017

Welcome to the new Betabox Update letter. Having seen success with a personal newsletter I’m certain this will be a good way for Betabox supporters to stay connected with the company.

The mission of Betabox
Since this is the first letter I want to reintroduce everyone to Betabox.
Our mission is to eliminate technology deserts.
That means making it possible for anyone anywhere to access the technologies and knowledge needed to create anything they want.
We believe that additive manufacturing, design, electronics, biomedical, and prototyping tools should not be hidden away in the basements of university buildings and corporate centers. They should be frictionlessly available in the public square,  supported by real people helping anyone master the skills needed to invent.
We make it easy for organizations to enable that future. Our distributed fleet of configurable lab spaces are rented by companies, schools, universities, and non-profits to create engaging hands-on experiences.
Everything we do revolves around making it easier to distribute the tools of the future to the communities and places where they can make the biggest difference.
Our Business Model Today
Our core business today is Betabox Experiences. We deliver hands-on educational workshops in our labs. In the Southeast we have delivered about 300 experience days and engaged 15,000 people so far.
This week we have announced a new offering: Betabox Lab Services. This service allows other companies to run programs on our lab fleet and leverage our Expert network. It is Heroku for tech labs.
By 2020 our goal is to engage 1 million people throughout an international lab network.
So what's up in February?
Launch of Betabox Lab Services (BLS)
The announcement this week of Betabox Lab Services marks a key milestone in the company. I’d appreciate it if you shared that link with your networks.
West Coast Activity
In January we successfully deployed a BXA class lab for a Lab Services customer in San Francisco:
This rental is part of a really cool 1 year program that I’ll share more about in the next newsletter.
Prepping for Southeast Experiences
In the Southeast we have concentrated our early Q1 bookings into March to focus on lab manufacturing. We hit our sales target for January and we are improving many ops systems and processes to gear to up handle the demand.
BXA Class Build Beginning
We are designing and resourcing a Betabox build for “Curie,” an additional lab for the Southeast. It’s a BXA class, meaning it is based in a shipping container and is best suited for rentals lasting longer than 5 days.
Design folks - reply to this email letting me know which paint scheme you prefer:
Expert Network Expansion
We are always looking for talented designers, educators, and creatives to join our Expert network. Right now we are looking for Experts with a life sciences + low-income education background. Forward the application to anyone you know with a relevant background.
That’s all for now, thanks for reading (you are more than welcome to forward these letters to others by the way). Email / Tweet me feedback on this format and I look forward to sending the next update!
